From: What Tami Said (via @kellyhogaboom on Twitter)I've written about the relationship between allies and oppressed groups before, most notably here and here. But Guage over at Radical Masculinity makes a powerful case for rethinking the notion of "allies" all together:We really need to stop using the term ally. Suddenly, the dance of chaos slows into a rhythm and a calm inner voice says, "allow me to take over...just let go and let me take over..." In this moment you realize that life is more than the "to do" list, it is now...I notice that when I am runnin the days feel shorter. I go to bed late - I wake up tired - I drink some caffeine and eat more sweets cause my body is sending messages that it needs energy...Without a thought I am back on the sugar ups and downs -which could lead to mood up and downs...Its a terrible cycle that so many people find themselves in...A big part of this LOVE FEST for me is finding a balance. I am constantly finding a way to integrate my whole life so that I can create a healthy pace that works for me...Over the last couple of years, I have been sluggish, not working out

From: Nudemuse...daily nattering. All too often there is a prevailing thought process in people who are not fat when they speak of or to fat people. Or even about fat people. For the record I'd like to give my home skillets who are not of the fat ass sort a few words of wisdom from the fat side of the force.(Now I am going to use generalities here that are based on personal experience, talking to other fat people and 32 years of observation. Do remember, I'm not a stats thrower so if you want statistics do your own damn research.)First thing.Fat people are fully aware most of the time that they yes fat.Yes there are people who are unaware for whatever reason as to the size of their body but a large percentage of us are fully aware. That being what it is, you (as in the at large populace) do not need to stop and point, walk up to people and say ZOMG FATASS etc.All that is is an excuse to be rude. Here's the thing.Bodies are not public property. My body is really none of your damn business. And if you feel perfectly withi

From: What Tami Said I have spent a lot of time over the past few days ruminating on racial identity. My thoughts were sparked by a confluence of events: Last week, PBS aired the final episode of Dr. Henry Louis Gates' "Faces of America"--the one where participants including comedian Stephen Colbert, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and poet Elizabeth Alexander learned the results of autosomal DNA tests designed to uncover their "racial" lineage. I received a link to a study being conducted by the University of British Columbia, seeking to determine if and how similar DNA tests have influenced participants' identities. And I also received the results of my own autosomal test--the most recent of several DNA tests I have taken to help further my family history research, pinpoint my African origins and shed more light on my lineage. So, I have been wondering: Can getting a piece of paper in the mail that says 20 percent this and 30 percent that and 50 percent the other change the way we see ourselves? Should it?What does i

The building is populated with numerous old people, and they like it hot. So the building is. All the time. I estimate the temperature to be about 80 degrees Fahrenheit. All.the.time.You know, I thought Id like this change in household temperature, but I don't. Don't get me wrong, I prefer warmth to cold, but this is ridiculous! How would you answer today’s query:There is quite a bit of debate about a woman’s strength versus weakness. How do you define a strong or weak woman character? Have you ever unconsciously or consciously taken a specific character and read her as a representation of all women. Do you think female archetypes accurately reflect the shortcomings and strengths of our gender? Ana asks, “Do you find that you tend to be more critical of female characters than of male ones? What are some examples of heroines or female villains that you think were well-written? What about ones that you felt were not?”I read predominantly women's literature or books with female leads and that is because I am actively seeking out our voice and role in the larger society.I am by nature a critical reader; I am always asking questions like the ones Ana poses. I really give thanks for the practice of Maat - those 42 Laws seem to reach the inner core and ask the deep questions around loving honesty.I have had a long work week and I am ready for some much needed rest. I will turn in early tonite with the hopes of working creatively for the rest of the weekend. I encourage you Sistahs to take loving time for yourselves...sleep in, take rest or take a day of silence. I sometimes drive to the bay, sit at the park and draw pictures. Working with the heart chakra is work. Yes, we have good feeling but there are also the aspect of heart healing that can be heavy - so, take it easy. Be patient with yourself as you heal.Be Well.Hugs,Sis. Camara

Call me a geek, but I enjoy reading them. I hoard reference books. Our girls and we, women, are bombarded with narrow, stifling images of ourselves. There is a lack of positive imaging. However, rather than simply complain, let us educate ourselves and take on the responsibility of promoting and supporting women. And there are those men who love and respect us who celebrate us as well so the question is, who and what should we be reading in honor of women? If you don't own or haven't read any reference titles, what memoirs, autobiographies or biographies do you recommend? What women's book impacted you in an indelible way? Do you have any favorite books by women about women?Post your links here. Each month, I'll draw a random name among the participants to win a book from our Prize Bucket. Please join us. And read to your favorite girl.

From: Sistah Goddess I was taught that rocks, stones and crystals are the "bones" of the earth. I think this is because within them are the stories, the memory, the remedy. Since the ancient times we know that gemstones/crystals carry in Spiritual and healing qualities. Our Ancient Kemetic Ancestors used a variety of precious gemstones in their jewelry, such as turquoise, amethyst, beryl, feldspar, garnet, lapis, opal, amethyst, garnet and more...Crystals are thought to be natural conductors of energy. We can use these gifts from mama earth to transmit healing power to different parts of our body. Our bodies have 7 major chakras or energy centers. These chakras are run from the base of your spine all the way to the top or what is called the 'crown' of your head. Chakra translated means wheel or circle in Sanskrit. The seven centers are pictured as wheels of light -they have their own color, crystal, element and function. We are at our best when all these centers are functioning well and balanced.
