From: African American Empowerment Blog (AAEB) Jay-Z announced on Thursday that he would give two benefit concerts at Carnegie Hall in February to raise money for college scholarships and for a United Way program aimed at reducing the dropout rate among New York City teenagers.

The concerts will be on Feb. 6 and 7 and will be the first time Jay-Z, perhaps the most successful rapper of the last 15 years, has played the hall. Most tickets will be offered privately to philanthropists and wealthy fans, and will range in price between $500 and $2,500. A few will be offered for sale to the general public on Jan. 30.

For nine years Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, has operated a foundation with his mother, Gloria Carter, that each year provides college scholarships to more than a 120 students from poor backgrounds. The foundation has distributed about $1.4 million to 750 students since 2002.

Jay-Z said he hoped the benefit concerts would raise millions of dollars for both his foundation and the United Way, which has a program wo

From: African American Empowerment Blog (AAEB) As a solo artist and as a member of the influential West Coast group N.W.A., Ice Cube was a driving force that helped put gangsta rap on the map. He stood out from his peers as a great - if controversial -storyteller with a tremendous presence onstage. It was only a matter of time before filmmakers recognized his potential. Much as Ice Cube made his mark representing the tough streets of South Los Angeles in his music, his early film appearances likewise cast him as familiar characters from the 'hood. He showed great screen promise with his debut in John Singleton's Academy Award-nominated "Boyz 'n the Hood" (1991) and built up an acting resume with a string of thugs before taking the helm as a screenwriter and producer of the successful "Friday" film franchise, including "Friday," (1995) "Next Friday" (2000) and "Friday After Next" (2002). From that more lighthearted take on urban life, Ice Cube stretched his range with an acclaimed performance in David O. Russell's war film "Three Ki

From: African American Empowerment Blog (AAEB) Sing Your Song is the result of a confluence of many events, things as diverse as the passing of Marlon Brando, a look back at the lives of many other unsung heroes in the fight for justice as well as the faithful love (and gentle nagging) of two daughters. Like Brando, there are many public figures who are not known, primarily, for their activism, their compassion and their dedication to human rights. Harry Belafonte is one of them:
“Cecilia, the daughter of another silent warrior, my friend Gregory Peck, had just completed a documentary on her father’s remarkable life. Coincidental to this, was the tugging by my daughter, Gina, to document my own journey. For many years I had resisted prodding by several who felt that I should both write and film my story. The idea as an end in itself seemed too self-serving. But I was awakened to the possibilities of making such a commitment by revealing the stories that could be told of and by all those with whom I shared an unending quest for

"The Sixers are family, and it is very difficult to say goodbye to an organization of great people with whom we have worked so closely over the last 15 years."Forbes magazine valued the team at $330 million this year – which is 17th in the league. The Club was facing major financial set backs due to a decrease in funds from federal, state, and private funding.

"Mr. Combs' contribution comes at a time when we were faced with the possibility of eliminating existing programs and/or club sites. 100% of Mr. Combs' contribution will go directly to the young people, and provide educational, recreational and social enrichment programs allowing us to move forward as a club, uninterrupted." said Willie C.
From: African American Empowerment Blog (AAEB) NEW YORK — On Thursday night, Jay-Z hosted a carnival at the Hudson River Park pier for his Shawn Carter Foundation. But it wasn't all Ferris wheels and funnel cakes — unfortunately Momofuku doesn't make those. The event was called Making the Ordinary Extraordinary, and it sought to raise funds for college scholarships.

MTV News caught up with Mr. Carter at the event, where he said the evening was about having fun while raising money for a good cause. Jay said two of the worst things in life are a waste of talent and a person who applies him- or herself but is unable to advance due to financial hardship. He hoped this foundation would help ease such burdens and assist people in recognizing their potential.
"Just providing opportunity and seeing what people do with that opportunity. If you want to go further and you want to further your education, just giving someone that extra little push [so] that maybe you'll turn out to be someone special," Jay said.
