Eric Croomes The recent exchange of temperaments between the Reverend Al Sharpton and Tavis Smiley has generated a lot of buzz regarding black progress – or the lack thereof. Smiley and “Rev. Al” didn’t mince for words on this past Tuesday after Smiley appeared on the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show and basically singled out black leaders – including Sharpton – for being soft on President Obama’s apparent reluctance for giving due attention to the woes of African Americans and inviting these leaders to debate the issue next month in Chicago. At issue is whether President Obama should move forward with a so-called black agenda; that is, should he expend some of his political capital to address what ails the blac

So Who Exactly is Responsible?

From: The Village Report with W. Eric Croomes A Special W. Eric Croomes Commentary Several years ago noted NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley made headlines when he insisted he was not and neither should he be considered a role model for black youth. This despite the fact that millions of youth virtually worshipped at his very feet, indeed his very shot. Barkley’s words unleashed a torrent of criticism but were indirectly followed by others of the black elite who echoed his opinion. But consider the following: • 58% of all Black 4th graders in the nation are functionally illiterate & 85% are reading below grade level. • A Black boy born in 2001 has a 33% chance of going to prison in his lifetime. • A million Black males are in prison. • 2.4 million Black children have an incarcerated parent. • Murder is the #1 cause of death among our young men. (Source: OneMillionMentors.Com) So who exactly is responsible?

From: The Village Report with W. Eric Croomes Guest Commentary by Dr. Boyce Watkins I recently watched an ABC News special about Black women not getting married. It featured a number of beautiful, intelligent Black women who couldn‘t find husbands. The show, which quoted Steve Harvey, who wrote a book on relationships last year, allowed the guest to drone on about how sad it is that the Black men that Black women want are just too blind and pathetic to see how great these women really are.I can’t help but find it odd that Black women in America are taking relationship advice from a comedian. Not to hate on Steve, but you’ve got to wonder if there is a qualified relationship counselor available somewhere who actually studied this stuff in school. Perhaps it’s because Black America is getting relationship advice from a comedian that our family structures have become a great big national joke. We all know the story: over 70 percent of all African-American women don’t have husbands. That is a tragedy for the entire family

In the face of racism and marginalization, they work to establish a Cultural Awareness Youth Group, a vehicle for building pride and self-esteem through educational and cultural programs. With help from mentors, they discover and share, the richness of their heritage and learn some of the ways they can begin to affect change.
The Amistad Rebellion

From: Black Media Mine The Amistad CaseBackgroundIn February of 1839, Portuguese slave hunters abducted a large group of Africans from Sierra Leone and shipped them to Havana, Cuba, a center for the slave trade. This abduction violated all of the treaties then in existence. Fifty-three Africans were purchased by two Spanish planters and put aboard the Cuban schooner Amistad for shipment to a Caribbean plantation. On July 1, 1839, the Africans seized the ship, killed the captain and the cook, and ordered the planters to sail to Africa. On August 24, 1839, the Amistad was seized off Long Island, NY, by the U.S. brig Washington. The planters were freed and the Africans were imprisoned in New Haven, CT, on charges of murder. Although the murder charges were dismissed, the Africans continued to be held in confinement as the focus of the case turned to salvage claims and property rights. President Van Buren was in favor of extraditing the Africans to Cuba. However, abolitionists in the North opposed extradition an

From: Black Media Mine BIOGRAPHY: Drusilla Dunjee Houston (1876-1941)In 1999, the Uncrowned Queens Institute for Research and Education on Women, Inc. was established in Buffalo, New York in honor of Drusilla Dunjee Houston. The Institute is named after Houston’s 1917 poem entitled America’s Uncrowned Queens. Like many African American women writers swallowed up and languishing in the historical gap, Houston is one of the most prolific and all but forgotten African American women writers of the 20th century. Considered a “historian without portfolio” and dismissed as a serious historian and writer by leading Black male historians of Post Emancipation and the Harlem Renaissance, e.g., W.E.B. DuBois, Alaine Locke, Carter G. Woodson and others, Houston burst on the historical literary scene in 1926 with Volume I of her magnum opus Wonderful Ethiopians of the Ancient Cushite Empire Book 1: Nations of the Cushite Empire, Marvelous Facts from Authentic Records thought to represent the crowning achievemen

From: Black Media Mine I lost interest in history at the time I found out that all that was to be said about my heritage was that my ancestors were slaves and before that heathen savages and cannibals and such. Our contribution to American Culture was Negro Spirituals. What a snow job. I remember we used to play the "you be such and such a character" in school and I wanted to be Cheyenne, a favorite cowboy character of a TV program by the same name but my classmates were like you can't be Cheyenne, Ray can be Cheyenne you be the Kingfish ( an Amos and Andy character). Hell, Ray couldn't even ride a horse and I rode broncos (for real!) Since I was raised in The Rural Northeast, went to a predominately white school, and didn't have anyone teaching me otherwise. I didn't go to college or University or have access to big city libraries so I had to wait for "The Internet" to come to my rescue and did it ever. Now it's my pleasure to share with you some of the treasures I find for example if I had known about the

The Black Male Unemployment Rate

From: The Village Report with W. Eric Croomes What a brotha needs for the New Year, let alone Christmas, is a job! According to recently released statistics from the U.S. Labor Department, 1 in 5 black males (17% unemployment rate) twenty and over is unemployed. Compare this to the white male unemployment rate of 8.5%, and you’ll see why times are disproportionately tougher for brothas. So what’s the answer? The Village Report.Net believes it must become the full-time job of the community to reverse this trend. But keep in mind that unemployment of this order is symptom of a greater malady. The source is most likely the depressingly low number of black males graduating from college (or, for that matter, attending college). In short, we must redouble efforts to impact the thinking of our young, black boys.
