How Truth Killed a Friendship (and I’m okay with it)

From: Black 'n Bougie I was "de-friended" by an actual friend of mine on Facebook last week. We'll call her Angela. Now truthfully, I don't follow my updates on Facebook but I decided to check on Angela's status updates because we had exchanged "words" with a few weeks ago. So it wasn't until I went to find her Facebook page I was told she was no longer my friend. Hmm. I felt some kinda way about that. I could have picked up the phone or fired off an email but in reality, I was okay with it. We have been friends for over ten years but talked to each other less and less in the past few.
Long story short, a few years ago Angela called to tell me she was worried that her young daughter was becoming sexually promiscuous. I bit my tongue (darn near in half) but she kept asking and asking my opinion. "Do you really want to know what I think?" I asked her. She assured me she did. I told her it was not going to be pleasant but she said she really wanted to know. Finally, I just said it. I told her that perhaps (jus

From: The Black Snob Feed It's all a slippery slope. Isn't that what we on the left have been saying all along? That if you deny the rights of non-Americans it's only a matter of time before people start thinking the Bill of Rights was printed in invisible ink. Right now Sens. John McCain and Joe Lieberman are floating a bill that would allow for American citizens to be detained without charge. Sure it's unconstitutional, but that's never stopped them before.

From: Black 'n Bougie My twitter friend @CarolynEdgar coined the phrase "HollaFail" yesterday to describe some grown dude trying to holla out of the passenger window of a car (No Scrubs, sir. No Scrubs). For those in need of an ebonic to bougie translation – HollaFail = an epic failed attempt to pick up someone of the opposite sex for romantic purposes. Anyway, I'm stealing the term for this BougieTale about the fella I met at the bookstore on Sunday. I decided to pen him a little note:Hey Dude,
Remember me? Sweats, ponytail minding my own business in the fiction section? You came up all handsome smiles to the magazine section next to me. And while, "Um, hey, um," may not be the smoothest opening line I've ever heard; your flashing dimples make it seem okay. It was clear by the way you grabbed the first magazine your eyes fell on and then immediately turned back to me with the dimples and eye-twinkle that this was a roll up. Even though I'm on a self-proclaimed man-break, you were cute enough for me to at

From: Acting White I stopped by 7-11 tonight to get some beer and got a bit I did not expect. As I approached the counter, the customer in front proceeded to engage the two Middle Eastern check-out guys in some chit-chat. They went along with his jovial banter and I thought nothing of it. As I put my stuff on the counter, the other customer exited - and then it got interesting. The first checkout guy turns dead-pan to the second and states in a heavy accent, "so what do you think?", nodding toward the door, "gay or straight?" Huh? I must have had that WTF look on my face. The second guy looks at me with an ‘oh-shit’. And time froze. And then time thawed. Second guy nervously interrupts, saying, "he didn’t mean anything, he thinks he is a comedian”. “Yes”, says the first guy in a serious face, “I think I'm funny”. I pointed at the first guy and said sternly, ‘look(!), for the record, I’m not saying shit to you or him, so when I leave, you better not ask your friend shit about me, you und

From: Black 'n Bougie It's been a while since we had a Bougie Cocktail Moment. But go ahead and raise them up. Today is International Women's Day.International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, IWD is a national holiday. Women's Day was first celebrated in the United States in 1909. Two years later, more than 1 million people attended events in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland during the first International Women's Day.
During International Women's Year in 1975, IWD was given official recognition by the United Nations and was taken up by many governments. International Women's Day is marked by a national holiday in China, Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

But I assure you I am not as rude as I seem. I assure you that I am not arrogant or that I do not appreciate the emails and other correspondence of those who think enough of me to take time out to communicate with me; I am simply a man who is sometimes overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the tasks I have before me.And yes, to answer your first question, I do have a number of other white readers, but the funny thing is that most of them, well all except you and another, choose to comment by email instead of leaving comments on the page. I think that they feel as if they will be verbally accosted or something. In fact, for a good while now, I have been carrying on a running dialogue with a Jewish man somewhere in New England. But let’s deal with those issues you have raised. At this point in my life, I have grown bored of talking about race

From: The Black Snob Feed "As much as I may miss the thrill of dating, sleeping with, meeting someone new, I regularly thank my wife for not being crazy. When we are out, one of our favorite things is to pick out the couple who is dating and thank goodness they aren’t us," Joe, Married In Maryland, 30.

It's ugly out there. But then, when hasn't it been?
Ever since the day your pa stopped rationing off your hymen for a couple of goats ... wait. It wasn't cool then either, was it? Ever since Massa ... wait? That was kind of messed up too, right? Damn. It's really hard to romanticize the lives of women past. The lives of women who had few choices -- if they ever had a choice at all. We fought and died for choices. And now we have them. Unfortunately, dating is not a Democracy. Heading out on the open market means your destiny (and happiness) is in your own hands. Maybe you find the right guy/girl for you. Maybe you don't. No one wants to hear about the "don't" part. We all want to believe there's som

From: Black 'n Bougie Let's all join hands and sing Kumbaya for a moment shall we? We simply are not going to get on the same page about a lot of things. That's both the beauty and the irritation of the human race and the African American culture. The only thing we will ever agree on is that we all breathe air, need water and think differently. That "think differently" thing was made abundantly clear Sunday night as I watched (sort of) the Oscars. More than watching the show, I watched the comments from folks on Twitter. Here were some of the issues where people simply could NOT agree to disagree:
Mo'Nique: Some people felt she deserved to win the Oscar, others thought she did not. There was a belief that "we" (African Americans) only win Oscars if we are pimps, abusers, victims or monsters. (I counter with Whoopi Goldberg and Sidney Poitier). There was also irritation that she mentioned Hattie McDaniel in her acceptance speech. Not sure what was wrong with that.
Tyler Perry: They panned on Tyler Perry in th

Sunday Short: Urban Prep Success Story

From: Black 'n Bougie Now here is a story I would like to see highlighted on CNN's Black in America 3 (but probably won't). In Englewood, one of Chicago's roughest neighborhoods sits the charter school Urban Prep. It was announced last week that all 107 seniors were accepted into college. Every. Single. One.Chicago's only public all-male, all-African-American high school fulfilled its mission: 100 percent of its first senior class had been accepted to four-year colleges. Mayor Richard Daley and city schools chief Ron Huberman surprised students at the all-school assembly Friday morning with congratulations, and school leaders announced that as a reward, prom would be free.
The achievement might not merit a visit from top brass if it happened at one of the city's elite, selective enrollment high schools. But Urban Prep, a charter school that enrolls all comers in one of Chicago's most beleaguered neighborhoods, faced much more difficult odds.
Only 4 percent of this year's senior class read at grade level as

From: The Black Snob Feed Coming to a Snob Blog near you, a new feature I like to call "Menfolk: How You Doin'?"
As womenfolk we can sometimes find ourselves talking into circles over sex, love, dating, marriage and other issues that sometimes involve those people with penises. So, I decided to hit up some black male long-time readers of mine -- some married, some not -- and ask them what they thought about the so-called "Black Marriage Crisis." After all, the black men in this debate were rapidly turning into Ralph Ellison's famed "Invisible Man." Either painted as no-good layabouts, players or white women-chasing, self-loathing miscreants who wouldn't piss on us even if we were on fire. Naturally, with all this negative press SOME dudes would be all "AHEM! I'm standing right here and I can HEAR you!"
I asked my readers/friends to be BLUNT. In some cases painfully so (but not mean). What I learned was fascinating and I will be sharing my report, warts and all, come Monday.
I decided to do this because often ti

From: Acting White Poor Blacks talk in movies, and not just to each other. Oddly, they talk and/or about the people on the screen, as if a response is somehow possible. The non-Black and non-poor find this rude. I would agree. That’s why I am very selective about theaters and attendance times. A White guy in Philly capped a brother for talking in Benjamin Button – I guess it really pissed him off (here). Philly’s a tough town.So then, what’s up? First off, Black folks have no corner on the rudeness market. Rudeness is up everywhere. Don’t believe me? Check out the study (here). White kids are rude, even when they’re not imitating Black kids. Discipline is down, acting out is up. However, when poor folks act up people really get in a snit, because if you are poor in America, you are supposed to be quiet and unobtrusive. Poor Whites got that memo, poor Blacks folks did not. Also, to the MSM, White ignorance is embarrassing and not news, while Black ignorance is entertaining and sells. There are

Okay, don't shoot me… I absolutely don't feel this way today but I definitely did during a super bitter phase I went through twelve years ago when I first wrote the opening line to my first book, Heard It All Before. As a matter of fact, reading over the book now is like visiting an old friend that you still find entertaining after all this time. Flipping through it to prep for an interview this week it made me wonder… if I could go back to Michele from early 1998 – what would I tell her? She was living in Northern California having a fine old time. It was the tech boom and everyone was making money. Even people that weren't trying to make money were making money. Life (as I knew it) was good and uncomplicated. So what would I tell myself assuming I don't want to end up exactly where I am today? (Which , by the way, is not a bad

He is in town for a conference on micro-finance, an activity whereby loans are made to very small businesses/individuals in developing countries, like Kenya. I have known many Africans, but this man’s features stood out cleanly and most candidly. I said to myself, now this is an African!Anyway, after pleasantries, I jump right into asking how he has ‘found’ the US, on his initial visit. His observations got right to it. To start, his sight-seeing consisted of one place, the University of California, Berkeley. No Golden Gate Bridge. No Chinatown. No Fisherman’s Warf, just Berkeley. The man had education on the brain, and reinforced why African immigrants are such high academic achievers on US soil.Second, he was amazed at the infrastructure of the US. It wasn't my intention to rally up the Sisterhood with the "I am Woman Hear Me Roar" battle cry. Don't get me wrong, we are awesome though. We totally rock and if we wanted to get matching t-shirts and cabbage patch backwards down Pennsylvania Avenue to "Sisters are doing it for themselves"… well let me know when and I'll order up the frozen margarita machine. I really just wanted to squash the negative rhetoric, get a few things off my chest and share an anecdote or two. And I kinda thought I did that, with far more impact than I expected. But… wow! Along with the great uplifting and supporting comments came the blowback. Thanks to my readers' passion for the subject, the post calling for a halt on the Black Girl Beatdowns was retweeted and reposted all up and through the internet. Essence.com picked it up, it was "buzzed up" at Yahoo, landed on Digg, Facebook, Twitter, Technorati, Live Journals and places that I didn'

From: soulbrother v.2 People tease me about my office, especially my desk. Both are an absolute mess. In fact, my desk has almost ceased to function as a desk; it has, instead, become simply a place where I stack my stuff. Then the stacks eventually fall over, and I just seek out a new surface on which to start a new stack. But there is one corner of my office and my desk that is clean and absence of the ubiquitous clutter. That corner is reserved for my friend, my colleague, who has an office just next to mine. When I am here, she is usually here too there in her corner, reading, checking papers, on her laptop. Sometimes we chat. Sometimes we laugh. Sometimes we discuss books we’ve read. Sometimes we get all deep in discussing the problems and questions that have vexed mankind since the beginning of time. But mostly we just sit, each oblivious to the presence of the other, as we work on our respective tasks. She is sitting there now, composing some document on her laptop. She looks up. It had to go off the air for a few years and UPN had to die, but I eventually forgave her for introducing that abomination of a show onto the world. My hatred of The Parkers is something rich, fertile and pure and I could write invective-filled sonnets about it. But I won't because Mo'Nique has managed to become bigger and better than The Parkers ever were. Kudos. So, now they are forever obscured by her other exploits and her Oscar nomination and she is not solely known as the fat chick who screams "Haaaaaaay Professor!" at a man who doesn't want her.
But Mo? Can I call you that? Or Nique? Is that more apropos? What's up with all the too much information lately? I know we're currently living in the Age of the Overshare and I know I've overshared on more than one occasion, but I didn't know you'd recently become an ambassador for hairy legs and open marriages?

From: Black 'n Bougie As a follow-up to yesterday, I'd like to share the story of Miss Violet – my "maiden" aunt who was in all ways my grandmother and lived to somewhere around 100 years old (no one is really sure). My Aunt Violet was no joke. She was the second oldest female in a family of thirteen kids born and raised (literally) next to a sugar cane field in the Northeast Region of Guyana, South America. She assisted in raising all of her younger siblings, sacrificing her own schooling, ambitions and marriage options to do what was best for the family. My father was the youngest and ironically, the one who headed out for America first. He was, she often told me, the best and brightest of them all. He reached America, got worked like hell and eventually sent money to bring over as many of his older siblings as possible. My Auntie Vi came over and settled in New York City for a while. After my father moved to Texas and established his medical practice, he put the down payment on a house for her and told

And he just didn’t call me nigger all quick and simple like, but he drew the words out as he said them, snarled them at me—neee-grrr—in such a vindictive, baleful manner that I knew he did so with seemingly the deepest hatred, the most malicious intent.I sat with the dean on one side of me, and this lady from some administrative office (I don’t quite remember her function) on the other, and as the last syllable of the word reverberated throughout the room, it seemed that something else entered. It seemed as some awful miasma filled the room. It caused the dean to turn beat red. It caused the lady to gasp and clutch at some imaginary pearls. And it caused my mind to suddenly pitch backward to another incident. This is the very first time that some student called me a nigger, though I feel as if I have almost been called a nigger, or I have at least been called a nigger in so many words, many times since I began teaching. But my mind went bac

From: Acting White My kids drive me crazy with their grammar (some of it probably on purpose). I feel like they were never too young, or now too old, to learn the correct way to speak. This is what parents are supposed to do, or so I was taught. It’s not ‘me and so-and-so’, but rather it’s ‘so-and-so and I’. Instead of ‘where you at?’ it’s ‘where are you?’ And kids pick up bad speech like colds. I am not above dryly asking my son if he plans on working at McDonald’s after high school, grammatically speaking. So, I was intrigued to see some research on the actual cost of sounding identifiably ‘Black’.My backdrop for this post is the Urban League’s (UL) consistent yearly lament that the average Black person earns approx. $.73 for every White $1 pocketed - due to racism. To hear them tell it, racism makes Black kids and their parents forfeit the benefits of reading, writing, and arithmetic, stem to stern, dropping out at the 55% level. And business owners, presumably White, sho

From: Black 'n Bougie I'm not sure why I thought checking out The Marriage Ref, a new reality show created by Jerry Seinfeld was a good idea. That was a half hour I'll never get back. For some reason, I thought the concept was about helping couples solve actually marital difficulties with the help of a professional coach (which I would have found intriguing). It is not.It is about making married "ordinary" people seem real trifling and making celebrity panelists appear witty and hip. Only the trifling part worked. On Sunday night's show, one couple fought over whether or not to allow the husband to keep his stuffed dead dog in a constructed altar in their home. The other couple fought because bruh-man (yes, they were of color) wanted to install a stripper pole in the house. Are these difficult questions to answer; are these deep and probing marital issues? And are Jerry Seinfeld, Kelly Ripa and Alec Baldwin (!!!) people you want offering their opinions on your relationship? No, no and hell to the no.

So are Blacks really bad tippers? Also, does the race of the participants affect the tip? Check your seat belts and air bags folks.A little bit of robust research at Cornell (here) presents that not only do Blacks tip 20% less than Whites, Black servers get smaller tips all around, including from Blacks, AND Blacks tip Black servers lesser amounts than do Whites. Dame brings his introspective eloquence to BnB with a look at racism… that isn't really racism. Show him some love…At my best, I am a thinker. Don't get me wrong, I write. I love to write. But my love of thinking supersedes my love of writing. Hell, I think that I love to think about writing more than I like to write at times (yes, this can be a problem). At moments, I think aloud, and sometimes thinking aloud means that I take to some form of social media with my thoughts because I feel compelled to share what I'm thinking.
One of the few things I think about a lot, but I'm not to quick to share my thoughts on, is racism. I'll admit it. I do catch that "Christmas in July" spirit when it comes to writing about racism from time to time. I know that it's real. I know it's institutionalized and systemic. I've experienced my fair share of it, I suppose (I've been called a reggin in reverse by a former co-worker on a j

From: The Black Bot If I were to summarize my religious experience in a word, it would be "rollercoster." I have been low like during my childhood when I'd pray every day for God to save me from hell. I have been high when high like when reading the Bible and listened to sermons everyday. And then I've been up in the air like now when I wish I could forget about religion completley. Sometimes I marvel at the huge change--from the point where my beliefs about Christianity were as solid as a rock to now where when I see Christianity instead of a placid stream I see a muddy quagmire. I can point to the exact point of this change. It started when I wanted to receive the gift of speaking in tongues but could not. (I was raised Charismatic and was always taught that speaking in tongues and salvation go together.) I couldn't understand why I didn't get it because I was as sincere as a Christian could get about it. At that point, I started reading a lot about the subject and later was questioning the practice all

Al” didn’t mince for words on this past Tuesday after Smiley appeared on the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show and basically singled out black leaders – including Sharpton – for being soft on President Obama’s apparent reluctance for giving due attention to the woes of African Americans and inviting these leaders to debate the issue next month in Chicago. At issue is whether President Obama should move forward with a so-called black agenda; that is, should he expend some of his political capital to address what ails the blac

Yesterday a killer whale that is part of the Orlando, Florida, Seaworld orca show killed one of its trainers during a show. It has not been readily determined if the incident was an accident or an act of aggression on the part of the killer whale; some animal experts have that the killer whale was simply playing. To the 3,000 pound whale, people are simply toys. However, it has been noted that the killer whale in question has killed twice before. In one instance, the killer whale grabbed a biology student in its mouth and dragged her around the pool. When the student attempted to escape, the killer whale managed to block her path, and then the killer whale and two other whales tossed the student around between them. Sounds like a game of catch to me. The killer whales were probably having the time of their lives. Let me get this out of the way before I go any further. My hea

My Plan to help rehabilitate Black Popular Culture.

For days afterward, conservatives could not construct a sentence without a subject, a verb, and Scott Brown (sorry VP Biden). Conservatives were hanging all off Scott Brown like a cheap suit. He was even being touted, somewhat prematurely I think, as a possible presidential candidate for 2012. He could do no wrong. But then recently a procedural vote was held on the Senate floor on the new jobs bill, and Senator Brown had the absolute temerity to break ranks with his Republican counterparts along with four other Republican senators and allow the bill to actually be brought to a vote. And now the floodgates of hate have opened. Just check out some of the responses on Senator Brown’s Facebook f

It seems that when those purporting to be God’s folk step in front of a microphone in front of a camera, the mainline connection to the throne room gets a little fuzzy, and they say anything that comes to their heads.Of course, people with good, common sense recognize the absolute absurdity of these words and deeds, but the present reality is that common sense is not so common anymore.
From: The Black Bot A picture says a thousand wordsI just heard of this book by CW today. The cover pretty much sums up the depths of self-hated to which we have sunken. It's no secret that there is a gender war of sorts in the African-American community. Scores of us are verbally destroying our Brothers and Sisters in order to justify why we want to date anyone who isn't of our race. However, people who do this fail to realize that no matter how much they deride African-American (wo)men, they are pretty much shooting blanks as far as their argument is concerned. Here's why:1. Let's just be honest. You just see European as better. What all of these arguments come down to is a denial of racial bias. Rather acknowledging that they simply have a bias to Europeans, they put the blame on all of those of the opposite sex, saying that their in inadequacies forced them to find a mate outside their race. But anyone who is not in denial can see straight through this. We were all raised in this Euro-centric culture,

From: The Black Snob Feed By Luvvie
Welcome, my *pause* brethren and sisthren! It is Black History Month, 28 days of reminiscing about the colorful past of us melanin-blessed individuals. "I have a dream" will be recited to PIECES. Even Martin Luther King be giving the *side-eye* from up above like "Dang! Y'all know how to wear something into the ground."
