Think you're "grown"? 5 ways to prove it

From: Black 'n Bougie Grown \ˈgrōn\- adj. Having achieved full growth. Possessing maturity. Produced or cultivated in a certain way.

We've talked a lot this week about being grown - as in putting away childish things and being responsible for one's own actions and decisions. We've heard a lot of people claiming to be grown. And I think we can all agree it's not so much an age as a state of being. You don't get magically "grown" on your whateverth birthday. It's an evolution, a destination, a place to which (unfortunately) not everyone arrives. We all know one or two people "of a certain age" who act like they are one step out of kindergarten. That Peter Pan Syndrome is nothing to play with.

So you say you're grown... here are five ways to prove it:

1. Act like it - Children whine, point fingers, pout when they don't get their own way, find it hard to articulate their feelings, throw tantrums, cry with little provocation, require guidance, a steady stream of

We're just going to dive in today. Our letter comes from Janae. She's twenty-seven and she's been in a committed relationship with thirty year old Kendrick for three years. They live together in Kenner, Louisiana. Here we go:

Hey Chele and all the bougie dwellers:

The whole point of this letter is to ask if I'm right or wrong or does is just not make a difference?

Kendrick and I have been together for three years, it's been a great relationship and I hope we get married someday. Right before Thanksgiving, Kendrick left to spend a year in Africa. I spent ten days with him and then came back for my job plus my family and friends are here. Before I got on the plane to come back, Kendrick and I had this long talk about our expectations for the upcoming year.

From: Acting White "Mormonism (or the doctrines of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) teaches that baptism by water is a necessary ordinance for people to return to God their Heavenly Father. Mormons assert that the ordinance must be performed in the proper way and with the authority of Christ's priesthood. Many people have died without receiving a valid baptism, and they cannot undergo this precious ritual as mere spirits. "Because all on the earth do not have the opportunity to accept the gospel during mortality, the Lord has authorized baptisms performed by proxy for the dead. Therefore, those who accept the gospel in the spirit world may qualify for entrance into God's kingdom" One thing that should be made perfectly clear about Mormon baptisms for the dead is that each deceased soul has the personal choice to accept or reject it. There is nothing in Mormonism that states that the person who is being baptized by proxy must accept this ordinance; he or she is simply given the opportunity

I gotta just say no to young men that I could have given birth to. That's my line in the sand. [Though um, Cam - you know - if you are reading this, we can be friends. Special, special friends. Once or twice.]

As it is, Le Dude is over five years younger than me and every once and a while we bump into an issue where I have to remind him, "You needed to catch me in my late twenties, early thirties for that to work." He just rolls his eyes for the most part though I did catch him muttering, "Some days I feel older than you." under his breath. Side-eye to you, sir.

From: The Black Snob Feed Why are you doing this to me, man?* Why are you doing this to yourself?
Mitt Romney won't stop singing/ruining "America, the Beautiful," one of the best and most beloved songs from the Great American Songbook. I think he thinks singing it constantly looks patriotic rather than pandering and pathetic. But if you're going to turn every campaign stop into Country Bear Jamboree you need to actually be competent in carrying a tune.

While "The Star-Spangled Banner" is the National Anthem, my favorite patriotic song about America is and has always been the much easier to sing, less war-like and considerably more melodic "America, the Beautiful."
Like "Star-Spangled," "America" also has about five extra verses I've never learned, but it's my number one favorite patriotic jam, followed closely by "Battle Hymn of the Republic." (Which, in all actuality, is simply the best version of another American folk song "John Brown's Body.")
Then there's Ray Charles' legendary gospel version of "America

From: The Black Snob Feed Today's the day of the Florida Republican Primary! (Although early voting has been going on for a bit and more than half-a-million votes were cast before today.) Although its still (technically) a four-man race, Rick Santorum is tending to a sick daughter and Ron Paul is focusing on greener primary pastures. That just leaves your unloveable front-runners, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.
And Mittens is in the lead ... (for now).
That lead didn't come easy, since Gingrich was on the rise after race-baiting his way into a South Carolina win. But will a poor debate performance from Gingrich and a lot of passive aggressive "Isn't that so sad that Newt Gingrich is so unfaithful and pathetic? He just can't help it!" from Romney.
From The New York Times:

From: Black 'n Bougie Le Dude has a crew of guys here in Dallas that he knows from his Georgia days. Some were his line brothers, others they adopted to the crew along the way. We've come to call the main group of six the Georgia Boys. David found BougieLand first and then joined Twitter. Trey followed and eventually Jay, Shawn, Wes and Bryan followed suit.

When all of the Georgia Boys joined Twitter, they thought it would be a fun way to keep up with each other and folks they'd met on the Innanets. There were some growing pains - they had to learn the difference between what you text and what you tweet. There was a learning curve about how to check and reply to DMs. (Some of them are still challenged.) There were rules of engagement about how much to share and what to keep to yo' damn self. Others realized that alcohol and Twitter are a dangerous combination. And some were slower to understand that what happens on Twitter is pretty much broadcast out into the world forever. Foreve

From: The Black Snob Feed Can you see past a weakness so hard that it turns into a strength? Presidential wannabe Newt Gingrich tried to pull that off in an interview with CBN's David Brody where Gingrich tried to spin his "past weaknesses" as making him more "human" than everyone's favorite Republican Robot, Mitt Romney.
From Brody's blog:

In a one-on-one interview with The Brody File, Newt Gingrich says that he has “not hidden from the facts of my life, that I have confessed my weaknesses” and he believes that, in part, is a reason why evangelicals are able to get behind his candidacy.
He goes on to say that, “it may make me more normal than somebody who wanders around seeming perfect and maybe not understanding the human condition, and the challenges of life for normal people.”

I wrote: "(W)hen my Bipolar Disorder became dramatically worse in my 20s, the world that began and ended inside myself returned. Only instead of the self-centeredness of a child, I had the hyper-focus of someone so in love and in hate with themselves. I could build up and destroy myself all within the same hour with the thoughts in my head, all consuming thoughts that devoured me until all I could see was, 'I'm happy. I'm sad. I hurt. I vent. I have feelings. I need someone to pay attention.'"

From: Black 'n Bougie So after yesterday's post about conversational miscues- there was a lot of commenting about things the opposite sex says that drive the other crazy. I've listed the top five of each. Enjoy...

Five things women say that men can't stand:

1. "Nothing" - As in the answer to, "What's wrong?"2. "It's fine" - When it's clearly not fine.3. "Whatever" - It's a cop-out. You know it, we know it. So be it.4. "We need to talk" - Strikes fear in the hearts of men globally.5. Nothing at all - As in, we say nothing. That's when they know something is really, really wrong.

Five things men say that women can't stand:

1. "Let me call you back" - Thanks. Now we know we'll be hearing from you on 33rd of Neveruary.2. "Babe, we cool." - So you're just using me for cocoa and I'll never meet your mother.3. "She's just a friend." - Really tho?4. "Did you say something?" - Weren't you listening?5. Nothing at all accompanied by a shrug. - As in, the sanswer

From: The Black Snob Feed There's another GOP debate tonight! Batter the hatches!
They thought he was dead. They thought they killed him in Iowa. They thought wrong. Newt Gingrich is back, baby! And like the awful B-Movie he is, he's out for revenge. At first it was just about teaching that damn Mittens a lesson, but the Newtster messed around and race-baited his way into a South Carolina primary win. Then Mittens lost Iowa several weeks after winning it. And now it's all come up Gingrich. Even an old sex scandal couldn't stop him. He just kept swinging and won't go down.
If I didn't find the man completely repugnant I'd almost admire his audacity.
I never thought I'd see anyone run for president out of pure spite, but Newt is doing it and he's not backing down in this game of chicken he's playing with the Republican Party.

Now in my mind, when I say this it's because I 1) find what was just said interesting 2) need more time to marinate on what was said or 3) have nothing else to add at that time. Apparently however, when I use this phrase it is perceived as me saying, "I don't agree but I don't want to argue, keep it moving." Hmm... interesting.

I definitely have some conversational tells in my lexicon.

As I'm becoming irritated: "You know what..."

When I'm flummoxed: "Uh... alrighty then"

Starting off a long-winded story: "So the other day..."

Wrapping up a phone conversation: "Well okay girl..."

In the middle of an argument that I'm losing: "This is not working for me"

But when I asked others how they perceived those phrases, they had a multitude of varying interpretations. One of my exes would ask me how I was doing and I would answer, "Just peachy." Th

But another day, another indignity from people who act like it's the hardest thing ever to respect the office even if you don't like the man.
From The Los Angeles Times:

President Obama's warm reception in sunny Arizona on Wednesday lasted about as long as it took him to step off Air Force One and greet Gov. Jan Brewer.Brewer, champion of her state's controversial anti-immigration law, welcomed Obama on the tarmac with a handwritten letter and an intense conversation in which, at one point, she pointed her finger at him.

Brewer used this opportunity to plug her book, the same book where she claimed Obama once was patronizing and condenscending to her, a description the president allegeldy took exception to.

(Official White House Photo by Pete Souza)A new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll shows President Barack Obama's approval numbers are on an upswing. For the first time in six months, the presidents' approval rating (48 percent) exceeds his disapproval rating (46 percent). The president's numbers have been on the rise since the economic picture started to brighten a bit late last year. In December, a Washington Post/ABC News poll found that while Obama still had a low approval rating on his handling of jobs and the economy, his overall approval rating numbers had improved with certain segments of the population, including young adults, seniors and independent voters. The narrowing of the approval and disapproval ratings can be seen in the latest Gallup Daily Poll, but Gallup still has the pres

From: The Black Snob Feed For Clutch Magazine this week I tackle the complicated path the third wife of Newt Gingrich must walk. Last week, Gingrich's second wife spoke to ABC News about how she got dealt dirty by former Speaker of the House... just like his first wife. And the story of Gingrich's past loves is a series of other women becoming "Mrs. Other Woman." But can you cry victim in a relationship (as Marianne, wife No. 2 has done), when you knew he abandoned his first wife after she got cancer? Can wife No. 3 Callista Gingrich ever feel secure when she's married to an impulsive serial adulterer?
From Clutch:

I can almost (emphasis on “almost”) understand how someone falls into this trap. Love being blind isn’t a cliché. Many of us have made past bad choices in the dating department. And it’s pretty typical for those with cheating hearts to say all those sweet nothings about you being “special” and “different” and that their former partner

Will that make people stop voting for Newt, who recently creamed Romney, beating him by double-digits in the racially tinged, bitter South Carolina primary?
Hahaha. No. Because the problem many GOP voters are having is that while Newt Gingrich is a duplicitous character, Romney isn't exactly "Dream Date" material either.
As I tweeted during the most recent GOP debate when Ron Paul was talking about electability:

I'm talking about the acceptance of things that are just so-so and calling them excellent. Taking C-level work and calling it A+. It's everywhere - music, movies, schools, work ethics, books, actors, politicians, opinions - people are cosigning and elevating some regular-assed shiggity to legendary status. It must stop.

I have to accept my part of the blame in this. There have definitely been times when I have described things as "epic" or "uber" or "best ever" when they really, truly weren't. They were good, maybe even great but greatest of all time? No. Here are a few pop culture examples of what I'm talking about:

If you are expecting a sweeping historical epic that takes you on a heart-racing journey, this isn't that. If you are expecting a pivotal snapshot of an important moment in Black History a la Malcolm X, this ain't that. Red Tails is an aptly-written, beautifully filmed enjoyable two hour movie. Period.

For those who don't know, Red Tails is about the Tuskegee Airman training program. The film was written by Aaron McGruder (The Boondocks) and John Ridley (U Turn, Three Kings, Undercover Brother). Anthony Hemingway (Ali, Changing Lanes, The Wire) directed the film. George Lucas executive produced this movie and felt so strongly about it, he wrote a personal check for upwards of $50 million when he couldn't get a studio to back the project.

I will admit, I felt compelled to support the movie after bitching about the TPization of the film industry and lamenting about "where have all the black films gone?" time after time. I have no de

At minimum, the recipient of such needs to be eighteen to legally bear the risk of contracting any number of potentially fatal diseases, like hepatitis, from getting a tattoo. The misdemeanor charged Ms. Napier clearly misunderstands, like many folks, that all rights, including those of parenting and religion, derive from the constitution, not the bible, the Koran, the Book of Mormon, or the back of a cereal box. While some women have no problem pushing out babies well past their mid-30s, for many others they run into fertility issues. And psst. It's not just lady parts not working right. Dude parts are screwing up things too! So I wrote a post about it for Clutch. You know? So you could make sure to stay up on your gynocologist visits and you dudes could stop sitting your laptop directly on your lap if you plan to have kids someday.
Or so you can panic? Who feels like panicking!
From Clutch:

If you’re serious about being a first-time mother you need to learn the truth about fertility. While science has improved and our world is striving towards equality, your womb is still on the same biological schedule as it was back when people got married as teenagers. Don’t let the female celebrities over 40 baby boom fool you. Complications, fertility drugs, debates over surrogacy are all the reality for many who delay having children &nda

From: The Black Snob Feed Jon Hunstman, the Republican president candidate who could never shake that "Obama hired me to be Ambassador to China," moderate conservative stink off himself, dropped out of the GOP race today. Huntsman, naturally, endorsed the man who he most resembled without all the complications of being a horrible phony -- Mittens Romney.
Mittens, known for his robotic qualities and pathological inconsistencies was somewhere in South Carolina giving a poor black woman $60 in cash. It was a perfect storm of annoyances -- from the optics of a black person getting an actual "hand-out," to reinforcing the ideology that occasional donations from Daddy Warbucks should take care of our poor and not a strong social safety net built on our tax dollars, to reinforcing the belief that all poor, begging people are black people.
There's nothing not to find irritating. Right down to the woman saying God told her to go to Romney when reporters asked her about.

From: The Black Snob Feed The legacy of slain civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. is always in flux. This summer he was immortalized as the first African American and non-president to get a monument on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The statue (which is a lot more impressive in person than in photographs), was almost as heavily debated as who King was and how we speak of him. While some feel its important to look at what King accomplished while also acknowledging he was human, with all the good, bad, complications, issues and flaws that come with humanity, others prefer a lionization of his image, and to some extent, a complete sanitization. Leading to what scholar Cornel West once famously called the "Santa Clausification" of Martin Luther King Jr.
It's important to remember that King was a man. An extraordinary man, but a man all the same. There is this tendency for people to believe they can't have an impact on their world around them, that one person cannot make a difference, and that tho

Just looked at the to do list for this week and something had to give. Unfortunately, it's the blog. In addition to celebrating a birthday on Wednesday, I'll be helping Le Dude pack up since he'll be spending the next two months traipsing around Europe, starting with Spain. Yes, I'll be crossing the pond for multiple visits. I also want to tighten up the first few chapters on my next book to present to the publisher in addition to planning the publicity strategy for Pretty Boy Problems which comes out this summer. And oh yeah, I guess I should pay some attention to the day job.

All that being said, this week - might post, might not. But I'll be around, if you haven't joined me on the Black 'n Bougie Facebook page, please do so and if you haven't found me on Twitter - don't delay. How can you separate your politics from your hair when human nature is all about about putting meaning on what others see as meaningless? How do you embrace a movement based on "acceptance" on the one thing you can easily change?
From Clutch:

I used to write about my hair quite a bit, but found myself wanting to write less and less about it because, as a black woman, you always get one of two responses – “It’s just hair” or *insert lengthy explanation on why it is not*.

In the book (which I'm patiently waiting to be delivered to my house from the publisher so I can see what all the hubbub is), Kantor highlights "incidents" where Michelle Obama appeared to be at loggerheads with her husband's staff. Mrs. Obama, who's dealt with lots of "she looks angry" and "she hates America" and "she has a fat ass" and "Marie Antoinette/Socialist Salad Eater" talk from right wingers, sat Kantor's book over in the "those things aren't me" corner, and poo-pooed on it to CBS's Gayle King.

From: Black 'n Bougie It's that time of year. Usually at the beginning of the year, I end up helping folks out with their resumes. I've done seven so far this year. I don't mind doing it, I've spent over 15 years in recruiting and I know what catches a recruiter or hiring manager's eye. But every year, I see some of the same "old school" resume characteristics. Let's drag those resumes into 2012, shall we?

Your resume is your representative. It has to sell me on you at a glance. I need to know within my first scan that you are worth a follow-up email or phone call. I have 400 resumes in my inbox, yours needs to be the one at the top of the stack. I'm not looking for a reason to keep you, I'm looking for a reason to discard you so I can get to the next one. We're all about decreasing quantity and increasing quality in the HR field. Harsh but true.

Okay, so everyone knows the resume basics: name and contact information at the top. An introduction (see number 2 below) then work history, education, a

From: The Black Snob Feed So New Hampshire held the first primary of the 2012 election season (for those playing at home Iowa was a "caucus"), and Mitt Romney won by a healthy 39 percent.
Meaning, Romney is still the front-runner, still the "inevitable" nominee, still destined to go up against incumbent President Barack Obama in the fall. Oh, goody.
Unfortunately, sanity hasn't quite yet returned to the process and how could it? The GOP nominee is still this smarmy, punchable, grown up Richie Rich making $10,000 bets and calling corporations people and talking about how he hates to run out of pink slips. (Or maybe he was afraid to get a pink slip? I dunno. How do you get fired when you're the boss? Can God make an object so heavy even He can't pick it up? Mind-boggles.)
Proof that it's still crazytown can be found how on my first day back in D.C. after being out-of-town for two months I turn on the ol' television to the cable news and Mr. 9-9-9 is there, in the flesh, offering "advice" to Mitt "Mittens" Romney

If I had a dollar for every "rise & grind" or "you can sleep when you're dead" quote, I'd be retired to my tropical island. And I get it, I understand the theory behind it. Let's get up, be productive and make it do what it do. I agree... to a point.

With all of the ambitions and demands on our day-to-day hustle struggles and family/friend duties, sleep seems to be the one thing we are more than willing to sacrifice. When people think of "total wellness" most focus on diet and exercise not realizing that lack of sleep is just as detrimental to our health.

Sleep is like a reset button for your mind, body and soul. It's an opportunity to restore mood, regenerate energy, reduce stress, think without outside interruption and rest our bodies. The average person requires 6 - 8 hours a night to funct

The first debate, hosted by ABC News had so much promise, starting off with a lot of angry posturing, testy exchanges, harrumphing and epic put downs, but for some reason, ABC thought it would be way too exciting to watch six men on the edge of a breakdown lose their collective shit on stage, so they zapped all the life out that sucker by making the debate about how much Mitt Romney hates "hypothetical" questions about gay people and abortions.

But those first few exchanges were glorious ... before it turned into snoozy tripe. This is one of the few times where I actually would have preferred any of the cable newsers getting this debate so close to the New Hampshire primary. I find it hard to believe FOX News, CNN or MSNBC would have tried to stop the debate from turning into the desperate "Anyone But Mitt, but Not Those Other Four

From: Black 'n Bougie Hey young uns!

How you doing? How's life treating you? Never mind that last question. It doesn't matter how life is treating you, blink twice and it will be a whole different world. Listen. No seriously. Unplug your seventeen tech toys, take two deep breaths and actually listen. There are things I wish that someone had sat my young behind down and told me when I was in my twenties. Even more importantly, there are things that people told me that I wish I had listened to. I did not. I was positive I knew everything or that the person telling me was too far removed to really know what they were talking about.

You, my double-decade friends, have an opportunity here. Read it and take in what works for you.

1. You are not entitled to anything or anyone. Nor are you promised anything or anyone. Whatever it is you are positive you deserve, figure out how to live without it. You may get it, you may not. If you do, great - appreciate it and keep it pushing. If you

Rude Awakening

From: Black 'n Bougie It was about 3:00am when the sound of raised voices yanked me from what was some truly extraordinary slumber. Grumpily I sat up to figure out where the noise was coming from. It took no time at all to ascertain that a man and a woman were in the middle of the cul-de-sac screaming at each other in the street... at decibels that were uncalled for in that time and place. Really, any time and place but let's move on...

With a sigh, I got up and peeked out of the window and sure enough, there were Dude and Dudette in the street in pajamas howling at one and other. I didn't recognize them as neighbors. As I looked on with disgust and confusion, Dudette picked up her foot and landed a roundhouse kick squarely in Dude's abdomen. Before I could blink, he bopped her upside the head. Oh. Hells. No.

I dialed 911 and was informed that six calls had already come in and Dallas' finest were already on the way. The words "the way" were still floating into my ear when

Clutch Magazine: Oprah Isn't Enough to Fix OWN

From: The Black Snob Feed In a new post for Clutch Magazine I write how Oprah's OWN network is failing because it's still centered on the guru and not on the larger themes of what a full-fledged network created by the guru should be. People didn't want to see more Oprah, necessarily, they wanted to see what Oprah would actually do with a network. And what they expected was magic, not an unfocused muddle. People wanted Oprah to go big, or go back to basic television. Otherwise, how could she justify such a move?
From Clutch:

If Oprah could create a morning news show, what kind of morning show would she have created? Would she have hired TJ Holmes away from CNN instead of BET? Or would she have tried to woo Soledad O’Brien who just started a new morning show there now? If she could create a true crime documentary block, or a news magazine program a la “60 Minutes,” would she have hired the ballsy Lisa Ling to run it? Or could it have been a platform for Ann Curry before she finally was promoted

From: The Black Snob Feed In today's post for BP Magazine's Bipolar Blog I talk about how after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, I started to recognized disordered behavior in others as well, realizing that due to the mental health stigma, most would rather be labeled as unpredictable flakes, jerks or "different" rather than have people know they were afflicted with a mental disorder, then face ridicule and discrimination. I wrote: "I imagine it must be hard to live that lie, but as long as there's a stigma, celebrities will claim "exhaustion" or even drug addiction before they'll admit to the mental illness behind it all. Yet being sick should discount anyone's work, anyone's personality, anyone's career. You aren't less for simply having to overcome something more."

From: The Black Snob Feed A grandmother searching for her missing, runaway teenage granddaughter found the kid in Bogata, Colombia, where our immigration enforcement agency had deported her. Only the kid isn't Colombian, doesn't speak Spanish and had never been to the country before.
Apparently, being a 14-year-old runaway and all, she was in a bad way and was running around under an assumed name that happened to be the name of an illegal immigrant with warrants. But then it all gets weird once the perceived "adults" with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement believe that a 14-year-old American kid -- who doesn't speak Spanish -- is a 22-year-old Colombian illegal immigrant.
The girl was reported missing in 2010 and the Dallas police helped the grandmother find her granddaughter, Jakadrien, who was working as a maid in Bogata. She was deported in April 2011, despite being a U.S. citizen by birth and all, born of citizens, in this country and being African American, not a black Colombian. Adding to the b

From: The Black Snob Feed Starting February 4th this year, Prof. Melissa Harris-Perry will begin hosting her own show on MSNBC. (All those subbing gigs hosting for Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O'Donnell have paid off!) Airing on weekends from 10 a.m. to noon Eastern Standard Time, she'll be following "Up with Chris Hayes."
Here's more from the press release Harris-Perry sent out earlier today:

Harris-Perry, a long-standing political analyst and contributor to MSNBC, is a frequent guest of “PoliticsNation” with Rev. Al Sharpton, and also serves as occasional host of “The Rachel Maddow Show” and “The Last Word.” A highly accomplished author, scholar and speaker, Harris-Perry’s new program will continue MSNBC’s trend of bringing intelligent, informed voices to the cable channel’s weekend programming. “Melissa’s thoughtful analysis has been an incredible addition to our primetime programs and I’m thrilled to have her join our expanded week
