From: Let Love and Learning Overflow Our nation is filled with broken people. Anti-Depressants and sleeping pills are on the rise. Struggle and pain crosses racial, socioeconomic, and gender lines. Sadly, I did not know this. I mean I knew it but I didn't believe that white families could have as much crap going on in their families as Black families do. I didn't think Asian people could be as cruel and abusive to each other as Black people. I mean everybody knows Black people are jacked up. I thought we were some type of anomaly. That we were 'cursed'. I thought all white women felt loved and complete and valued. I thought all Asian women felt valued. I thought all White men were warm and caring and responsive. I thought everybody else but Black children had good dads and were born into a happy middle class existence. I thought everyone else had strong marriages and produced highly accomplished, respectful children. That Black women must've done something terribly wrong. As I began rea

From: Let Love and Learning Overflow Plenty...as it does about everything else. For all those who are naturally skinny or who are one of the very few who lost weight by sheer will power and preach the gospel of 'just diet and exercise', I would hasten to say to you that if it was as easy as diet an exercise, America would be the skinniest country in the world. Obviously there is more at play. If we look briefly we will find examples about how food are directly related to our financial situation, emotions, and decision making abilities. I'm still wrapping my head around some of these examples so if I don't give a little blurb about it I just want to throw them out for you to consider. Genesis1) Genesis 3: God gave them many trees to eat from- Abundance of Food is a symbol of wealth and power. We also see this in the 23rd Psalm. 'Thou will make a banqueting table in the presence of thine enemies'. 2)The first commandment with a warning was one connected to food."Thou can eat from any tree in the garden except the Tree of Goo

From: Let Love and Learning Overflow Over at http://www.curlynikki.com/ a post was presented where a man who's wife (the lady pictured above) had gone natural and thus wanted to break up...while she was pregnant with Baby #2. He thought his friends wife was a better woman because even though she had gone natural, she went back to relaxing after her husband had discussed it with her. 'You always do nappy styles' he whined. The solution that they came to was for her to do more straight styles and she was elated because it was a simple communication issue. Truthfully, she probably should've thought of that earlier on as a way to help him transition. **hangs head in shame*** Of course, the comments section was ablaze. There were two camps. The 'Oh no he didn't' crowd of which I was a part of and 'don't judge, you don't know the relationship. this is what men do' crowd. The original poster came back and tried to further excuse her husband's negligence to her pregnancy hormones tried to put a positive spin on it expla

Apparently not if Herman Cain (who has slave blood, dark-skinned, and two black parents, mind you...lol) is in the lead in several polls and hovering close to Romney in others. Check this out.... Herman Cain leads the national Republican field of candidates for president, according to a new poll released Wednesday. But another poll released the same day and conducted over almost exactly the same field dates shows Cain still trailing Mitt Romney. The poll that found Cain in the lead was conducted by Public Policy Polling, a Democratic firm that uses an automated phone call methodology, Oct. 7-10. It found Cain leading Mitt Romney by eight percentage points, 30 percent to 22 percent. I'll at least give him credit for trying. Folks, the clarion call for Black boys has been raised for 30+ years and it hasn't worked. In a time of mounting debt, America is not trying to invest in a culture that does not care about itself. Black men always say Feminism, welfare, the 'War on Crime', and 'War on Drugs' destroyed the Black family.
From: Let Love and Learning Overflow I caught this article over at Huffington PostDuring an interview that aired on CNN's "The Situation Room" on Wednesday night, Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain suggested that members of the African American community "have been brainwashed into not being open-minded, not even considering a conservative point of view."Cain signaled he sees "good news" in the situation in that he believes one-third to 50 percent of black Americans are "open-minded." He explained, "I meet them every day. They stop me in the airport. And so this whole notion that all black Americans are necessarily going to stay and vote Democrat and vote for Obama, that's simply not true. More and more black Americans are thinking for themselves. And that's a good thing."The remarks from Cain come on the heels of his surprise win in the Florida straw poll. It's not the first time the GOP presidential contender has made provocative remarks on issues related to race.My thoughts: He is absolutely right. Most Blac

From: Let Love and Learning Overflow I believe in the power of prayer. A week ago, I prayed that God raise the stock of Black women. Let us be seen as beautiful and valuable and just simply be loved as women. God opened my eyes and said without saying, 'I've already started'. I really do believe the perm/weave era of Black haircare hurt us more than it helped us. In its own way conceded that White hair is better. Thus, reducing our own beauty. One has to be blind not to see that Black women are letting go of the perms and weaves and are embracing their God given (abundant) beauty. With blogs like Black Girl with Long Hair and CurlyNikki and of course YouTube, the plethora of naturals have increase dramatically. Naturals are enjoying greater confidence, compliments, and just the peace of knowing that 'I am ok'. Contentment is the greatest beauty ointment in the world.
From: Let Love and Learning Overflow -Be aware of where you are after dark. This crime happened in a parking lot at night. What was Davis doing there? What was 'Redd' and Collins (other people implicated in the shooting) doing there? MacPhail was working as a nearby security guard for a Burger King nearby and intervened in a scuffle in the nearby lot, where Davis and others were. Any neighborhood that a Burger King needs to have a security guard is not one to be out at night, especially if you have a questionable reputation. -Attorneys! Attorneys! Attorneys! From start to finish the defense attorneys dropped the ball. I'm assuming Davis was not a wealthy man as he depended on public defenders. Public attorneys are usually the bottom of the barrel attorneys that usually assume the party is guilty anyway. They said their original poor performance was due to lack of resources, i.e I don't care if a man's life is at stake, I'm not working overtime unless I'm getting paid. People always assume teenage girls have sex because they have poor self-esteem. People always assume that if a woman sleeps around she has poor self-esteem. People always assume that if a woman has a male (or female) friend with benefits she has poor self-esteem. These people will start programs, start groups on facebook, and the like to tell women and girls that having greater self-esteem is the cure for sexual promiscuity. They urge that women should wait for the right man. Mind you, sexual promiscuity is only attributed to women. Having mindless sex is the opposite of what it means to be a woman when women have had mindless sex for milleniums. They will encouage women to wait...and wait...and wait until the right man comes along. To this day, there are women in America who have rushed into marriage just to have sex without the shame.
From: Let Love and Learning Overflow I date pretty frequently. I have always had better luck finding/dating unchurched men. However, I always had this nagging thought that I was doing something wrong. These nagging thoughts have been buttressed by some other nagging thoughts:1) God shall not be mocked, You reap what you sow. 2) Women are more spiritual than men. This is true across religions. Therefore, the numbers are not in a I'll-only-date-a-Christian woman's favor.3) Religious men tend to be great spiritually but lacking in other areas, namely finance.4) Religious men tend to be more abusive and domineering when they get married. 5) There seems to be a difference between a good man and a Godly man. I would much rather prefer a man that is nice and kind than a man that knows a lot of Bible verses.
From: Let Love and Learning Overflow Another thing to remember when considering Black Hair is that hair politics (straight is bait and long is king) is new to Black women. Unfortunately, we do not have pictures of how Black women wore their hair before the 'white people came'. Short nappy hair was probably standard. In tribal communities that have been barely touched by colonialization, short nappy rules the day. The women have husbands, children, and are respected within their village. So words like twist outs, length retention, protective styling, and deep conditioning are new terms and new concepts in the historical conscious of the Black world. Black women are really starting from scratch with how to deal with their hair in this highly hair conscious environment. Women of other races have had several thousands of years of hair practice and at least could hide behind the straightness or loose curls that they had when the 'white people came'.
Things I've Learned Since Going Natural

From: Let Love and Learning Overflow This is my third time going natural. The first time was by accident. I stopped perming my hair in high school and just pressed and kept it in braids. The perms were breaking my hair off as my mother didn't really know how to maintain my hair. I, like so many other black girls, was on my own in terms of hair care and personal maintenance. As long as I ate, had a warm house to sleep in, and got good grades, I was alright. Needless to say, I am still working on my self-esteem. I had a trim and coils in my hair the summer before my sophomore year in college (2003...2nd time). I loved that look and kept the coils and twists in my hair up until the remainder of my senior year of college (2005-2006). Sadly I do not have many pictures of that time in my life. In senior year, pressed my hair was just short of collar bone. Senior year and out of school, I kept my hair in braids, half-wigs, and partial sew-ins. Because every time I went to the hair salon they said my hair was eithe

From: Let Love and Learning Overflow More and more Black women are discovering their natural beauty which starts and stops with their hair. They are breathing free of the creamy crack, unplugging the pressing combs and wearing their hair just as God intended it. Thanks to the countless number of blogs, forums, websites, and of course the greatest encyclopedia eva, YouTube, Black women are feeling empowered to wear chemical free hair. This journey is not just a physical journey. The journey to wearing non-treated hair is mental. A Black woman has to say 'SHUT UP' to 500 years of hate from both external and internal sources all while learning the mechanics of her own hair and that is no easy challenge. It is made even harder when people who seemingly should encourage the freedom from subscribing to European standards of beauty don't. White people LOVE when Black women wear their own hair. Often Black women who decide to go natural are greeted with compliments from white

The Case For A Women's Only Church

From: Let Love and Learning Overflow An idea came to me. Since men have such issues with women wearing certain clothes to church or using their gifts to preach or lead groups of people without 'usurping their authority', maybe women should start their own assemblies for them and by them. Why are women spending a 10th of their hard earned money to be told that their gifts should be reduced to minding themselves (women's ministry), minding the children (Sunday School), or serving the missionaries (Hospitality Ministry) when there are so many women who have the gift of preaching, teaching, and leadership? If we removed gender from our assemblies, our leadership roles would be drastically different and the quality of Christian service would be better. How many women don't speak up during church meetings because 'theyre not supposed to speak'? How many women don't or can't offer great ideas because they don't qualify to be deacon even though they do more work than a deacon and a trustee put together, not because of t

This is true whether people want to believe it or not. Yes, the work will be difficult (most Americans really don't know what working hard is) but if you apply yourself, network, play your cards right, you can definitely climb the social ladder.3) The opportunities abound. People can whine all they want but there is no welfare, foster care, public schools, community colleges, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, free libraries, mentoring programs, non-profit organizations, job corp, head start, affirmative action, equal opportunity, subsidized housing and healthcare to help people get on better footing in most of the world. 4) I like the way we give. I've dated 2 African men in my short life and here are the reasons that I think they should be considered in conjunction with their American cousins. These traits can be found in those Africans and Carribeans that haven't been too Americanized. Also, men who may have one parent (esp. mother) that is African or Carribean and one parent who is American Black, even though they may have been born in the US.-Less baggage. Call it what you want but slavery did a number on Black Americans, male and female. Black Americans mindsets for the most part are abnormal to civilized norms. Gangs in Oceanside, California has called a truce in order to sell women. Here's a profile of one womanJessica worked as a prostitute in the booming internet sex trade. But she didn't work for herself. She says she had a pimp who set a quota of $1,000 a day – money that took about 10 dates to earn. Jessica told me she was afraid of her pimp who is a gang member. If she didn't work, she didn't eat, saying she once went 5 days without food. Needless to say Black women are very hard on Black men. Black men do not mince words when it comes to Black women either. Nonetheless, there is something to be said about men as a whole that they have missed/dropped/burned the ball when it comes to how they treat women. In church parlance, I can only look at this and think "what in the Hades are folks at New Birth thinking?" Who justsohappens to bring a dope boy-sized stack of money (secured with a rubber band, of course) to Sunday service? Wouldn't someone bumrushing the pulpit like this typically be tackled by church security? This is such a transparent money grab, I halfway expected to see a getaway car pull up. If Long and Co. are stooping to using performance art to convince congregants to give, what's next? The contend that Black women are on their on and need to stop enabling the poor behavior exuded by other Black people, but especially by (DBR) Black men. I guess it must be working because I was a sister solider type, lets have a conversation/roundtable/program about it so we can fix the problem. I now understand that there is nothing more to say. Black people are grown and do what they want to do. Black life revolves around the dysfunction of DBR men.
From: Let Love and Learning Overflow If one frequents Black Women Empowerment websites, you have become acquainted with the acronym DBR to describe Black-American Men. I just want to spell out some of symptoms of this disease that plagues many Black men. I'm sure the term begs the question, damaged by what? An amalgamation of historic events; events put on black people by others and events put on themselves. I really believe the damage comes from believing black men can do no harm. This has provided the cancer that pervades Black American culture. When people have no accountability, they run amuck to their own shagrin. And being that men are natural leaders (women are quite a force to be reckoned with in their own right) their recklessness effects the whole family/neighbor/community/country/world. DBR Men can be any age even though most tend to be Xers, Yers, and millenials (under 40). Nonetheless, these men had to get this faulty thinking from somewhere. They can hold any position in the community (Pa

From: Let Love and Learning Overflow The main reason I am exercising everyday is because I do not want to age poorly. My last Pastor is knocking on 90 and still runs 5 miles a day and looks not a day over 65. My present church bubbles with many black people who look good for their age, even though they are out of shape. I think to myself, how much better would they look if they dropped some pounds. How much better would I look if I dropped some pounds?I have been a size 10/12 since I was 12 (which is good I guess) but I want to lose more weight. I want to get out of the thick/chubby/plump range and into the petite (but not too skinny) range. I want to see what I look like at a size 8 and then decide whether or not to continue down to a size 6. Losing too much weight can be a blessing and a curse for a black girl. When a woman loses weight, she also looses some key assets (ahem) and I don't want to lose too much (blush, blush). When I am 40, I want to look 30. When I am 50, I want to look 35/40 and so on. Yesterday I got a message from the church secretary saying that they are trying to get the youth to come out to more activities and that the young adults are very influential to the youth but the young adults are the only group not doing anything and how can they help. They are going to have a meeting soon and I need to bring ideas if I am available to attend. This flipped my wig. There were three young adults in the teen choir for support, and because they didn’t want to sing with the geezers, one of them was a director. Two out of the three coordinators for the youth dance ministry were young adults. One young adult led the day camp. The young adults pretty much run the drama ministry. Young adults also frequented the youth study center with the teens. Another young adult taught on many occasions at the teen camp and vacation bible school. After directing me to Jeremiah 49:1-2 and explaining that the Ammonites are the Japanese ancestors and the Gads are the ancestors of the North Africans, she said that oil was put in the earth by God to lubricate it. When we extract the oil, especially at the pace in which we (the global community) have the earth doesn't have the neccesary amount of oil to secrete the earth's core and thus the earth grinds or quakes.I thought she was a little off base at first (the Scripture threw me off) but then when I thought about it, she may have a point. They will say all types of evil things with their noses up in the air. The author of Sojourner's Passport does a great post about this and how African-Americans should respond. However, as Oprah's South African school continues to be rocked by scandal, the immoral African mindset is being displayed for the whole world to see. African immigrants are usually wealthier than their impoverished bretheren who can't relocate so they easily hide their culture's incivility in Western countries. However, we must always ask ourselves, if their culture/country was so much better why are there more Africans leaving Africa today than at the height of the slave trade?
From: Let Love and Learning Overflow Everybody assumes that Black people are Democrats by default. Democrats know that if the Black vote falls below 80%, they will not win. Democrats know our Achilles Heel is racism and so they paint Republicans (or anybody who is not a Democrat) as angry racists as often as they can. I know. Republicans are far from warm concerning African-Americans. However, the Dems paint others as one thing without providing a tangible feasible plan for how they will make things any better. Just because one says they're better than another doesn't mean they're good. Black people need to be more strategic about who they align with politically and it is safe to say, siding with the Democrats has not been working. Here's why I think Blacks need to look to other parties:1. Democrats think with their heart. This is noble but it is expensive. We, Americans of all colors, cannot afford such logic.
